Gemäss Prognosen sollte es schon am Vormittag trocken werden, und einige Modelle prognostizierten gute Aufhellungen ab 14 Uhr. So bewegte sich der Tross mit ÖV und Shuttlebussen zum Parkplatz Hohwald, wo das Briefing statt finden sollte. Ein provisorischer Task wurde publiziert. Aber es regnete. Nicht zu sehen auf dem Radar, nicht in den Modellen. Es regnete um 11, als wir hochfuhren, es regnete um 12, als das Briefing auf 13 Uhr verschoben wurde, und es regnete um 13 Uhr. Wir hätten nochmals um 1 Stunde verschieben können, aber es schien hoffnungslos: So wurde gecancelt, und der ganze Tross bewegte sich wieder nach unten... Die Störung kam etwas verzögert, der in der Nacht erwartete Regen kam am Morgen. Es regnete als alle Pilot:innen in Linienbussen (reserviert mit Extrafahrten) nach Waldegg fuhren, während dem Briefing regnete es kurz nicht, aber es nieselte auch am Start noch. So wurde der Start auf 13:30 und der Airstart auf 15 Uhr verschoben. Zum Glück. Anfangs ging es mega zäh (ohne Sonne), später wars aber richtig schön zu fliegen. Der kurze Task bot viele Optionen, so dass alle sehr zufrieden waren. Fabrice drehte an einer wichtigen Stelle höher als Steph Morgenthaler und Michi Maurer, schaffte einen entscheidenden Übergang und baute den Vorsprung bis ins Ziel sogar noch aus. Basically, the forecasts are still uncertain, even for Saturday/Sunday. But we'll give it a try: Saturday Warm front, clouds coming in from the west. Wind on the ground from the northwest, 15kmh SW wind at 2000m, 25-30kmh SW at 3000m. Weak thermals up to 2800? Best thermals probably at 2pm (but still weak). Flyable, but I would be pessimistik for a valid Task. Sunday Bright but diffuse radiation, clouds coming in from the west later in the afternoon, followed by possible precipitation. Der Newcomer Challenge 2024 glänzte nicht mit langen Flügen. Nein, die offizielle Statistik ist mit 2 30-km-Tasks bescheiden. Aber es geht beim Newcomer nicht um XC-km! Sondern um das Lernen. An einem 30-km-Task mit vielen taktischen Entscheidungen kann mehr gelernt werden als an einem 100 im Oberwallis, oder nicht? Und selbst an den beiden Tage, an denen kein offizieller Task geflogen wurde, schwärmten die Teilnehmer davon, wie interessant es war, und wie viel sie lernen konnten. Und es muss gesagt werden: Chrigel ist super stark darin, zuerst eine spannende Aufgabe zu setzen, im Flug alle im Auge zu behalten (schon am ersten Task kannte er in der Luft fast alle) und dann am Debriefing auf alle möglichen Entscheide zurück zu kommen. Eine schwache Kaltfront schiebt kühlere Luft von NW gegen die Alpen, der SW-Wind in der Höhe ist aber stärker als heute. Wie hoch sich die ruhige Schicht unten einschiebt, kann nicht genau vorhergesagt werden. In Interlaken wahrscheinlich auf rund 2000m. Einfliessender Saharastaub könnte zudem in der feuchten Luft als Kondensions-Keime wirken und es wird bedeckter, als es in der Prognose zu sehen ist. Sicher ist aber, dass in Interlaken geflogen werden kann, weswegen wir morgen schauen, ob wir nach Amisbühl für einen Flug gehen.

Nach einem Meteobriefing fahren wir früh auf First. Positiv: Der viele Schnee ist hart und es konnte gut gestartet werden. Weniger positiv: Schon um 10 beobachten wir einen Tandem, wie er auf etwa 1700 in eine starkwindige Schicht gerät und die Ohren einklappt um an den Landeplatz zu kommen. Ok, der Föhn ist wirklich Föhn, und selbst Grindelwald ist nicht geschützt. So vergessen wi den geplanten Abgleit-Task und trinken Kaffee. Statt Bähnli will Chrigel fliegen und 6 andere auch. Bei meiner Talfahrt gebe ich schon durch: Unten 30, 40 kmh, böig. So gestaltet sich der Flug der 7 interessant und das Debriefing ebenso ... Da die Wetteraussichten für morgen Sonntag schlecht sind, beenden wir wahrscheinlich den Newcomer mit viel Theorie und einem BBQ gegen Abend. Definitiver Entscheid für Sonntag am Nachmittag.

Morgen Samstag baut sich am Morgen rasch eine beinahe klassische Föhnlage auf (nicht föhnig! - der Föhn-Swiss-Glider-Beitrag sollte Aufschluss geben). Die Temperaturunterschiede Süd-Nord sind bis 3500m eindeutig: Im Süden markant kälter, teils werden auch höher gelegene Pässe überspült. Der kräftige SW-Wind unterstützt den Föhn. Interlaken ist bei Föhn recht lange fliegbar. Auch morgen Samstag würde ich schätzen, dass es bis 11, 12 Uhr ok ist. Allerdings dürfe die Thermik schon am Morgen gut sein, was zusammen mit dem Südwestwind und dem zunehmenden Föhn-Wind (kommt dann aus SE, E) zu Böen und Turbulenzen führt. Bei beinahe 10 hp Druckunterschied würde ich keinen Task ansagen. Ob bis 11 Uhr geflogen werden kann, sollte am Morgen nochmals begutachtet werden.

Wegen dem vielen Schnee am Startplatz First fahren wir wieder nach Interlaken. Der kurze (29km) Task war trotz guten Bedingungen ausgesprochen spannend und taktisch nicht einfach schnell abzufliegen. 25 junge Pilot:innen sind im Naturfreundehaus Grindelwald am Newcomer Challenge 2024. 1 m Schnee an Startplatz und eine aktivierte LSR6 lassen keinen Flug in Grindelwald zu - aber hier am Amisbühl sind die Bedingungen ok. Ein kurzer Task ist gesetzt, das Livetracking on, die Schnellsten im Ziel sind: 1 Wagner François 12:27:57 2 Falquier René 12:28:20 3 Rindlisbacher Jan 12:33:26 4 Käch Flurin 12:33:38 1 Boller Marianne 12:34:10

Wegen der befürchteten Stabilität wird die Distanz von ursprünglich 80 auf gut 60 km reduziert. Eben, wegen den Bedingungen, aber auch, weil es der erste Task dieses Jahr ist. Am Startplatz sah es aber um 13h noch gar nicht nach Thermik aus... so wurde der Task nochmals gekürzt und der Airstart auf 15 Uhr verschoben. Wir, die Organisatoren, hatten aber auch so spät noch Bedenken, dass es wegen der stabilen Verhältnisse zu gefährlichen Pulks nahe am Gelände kommt. Es ging dann aber recht gut, das Top war zwar noch tief (1400), die Thermik funktionierte aber zuverlässig und so konnte Gruppe um Gruppe Höhe gewinnen und über der Jurakette warten. Die ersten km des Taskes waren schwierig. Viele versuchten den Führenden in Richtung Grenchenberg zu folgen und steckten kurz darauf fest. Die Montoz-Kette vereint sich dort mit der vorderen Jurakette, und es war schwierig Höhe zu machen und auf die vordere Kette zu fliegen. Und diese hat auch schlecht funktioniert. Profitiert haben diejenigen, die an die zweite Kette geflogen sind. Diese ging recht gut, 2-3 m/s und Top auf bis zu 2400. Der kurze Task konnte dann bei guten Bedingungen geflogen werden. Der erste, der diesen guten Entscheid gemacht hat, war Tim Von Burg. Der junge Local flog schon kurz nach dem Start an die zweite Kette, fand sich zuvorderst und konnte den Vorsprung ins Ziel bringen, knapp vor Steph Morgenthaler, Dominik Breitinger, Olivier Dietrich und Markus Wicki. Bei den Frauen gewann die Belgierin Karlien Engelen (für den Swiss Cup 8 Stunden angereist) vor Serena Ronchi und Martina Hauri. In der Sportklasse Michael Schwery, bei den Junioren Pascal Blum. Zu beachten ist die Präsenz des Zeno 2. Nicht nur der Sieger Tim Von Burg, auch viele weitere sind vorne in der Rangliste zu finden. Der Sonntag wurde wegen dem prognostizierten Wind abgesagt. Lokales Fliegen wäre wohl möglich, aber ein fairer, sicherer Task scheint uns nicht realisierbar. Auch wenn der Swiss Cup (wieder) nur einen Tag stattfinden konnte, so ist er doch ein Highlight dank der sympathischen und perfekten Organisation von den vielen Helfern des DGCB rund um Michi Küffer und der sehr schönen Infrastruktur im Haus der Schrebergärten am Landeplatz.

Ein kräftiges Hoch mit Zentrum über Mitteleuropa bestimmt am Wochenende mit trockener und warmer Luft das Wetter in der Schweiz. Mit 1028 hp sehr hoher Luftdruck, der in unserer Region aber von 1030 auf 1026 abnimmt. 24°, max Temp erst um 15:30 Am Morgen Zirren, ab 11 Uhr aber weitgehend volle Einstrahlung. Sehr vereinzelt kleine Cu am Nachmittag Boden: Sehr wenig Wind, an der vorderen Jurakette schwach von Süd 2000m 10 km/h West oder WNW 3000m 20 km/h NW Wir haben bis 1200m eine Isothermie, dann bis 2200 0.5°/100m. Die Isothermie wird von der starken Erwärmung (Morgen 8°, 16h 24°) aber durchgeheizt. Thermik Top 14h 2000-2100 16h 2400-2600 Gemäss Prognosen ist die Thermik an der vorderen Jurakette schlechter als an den hinteren. Meteoparapente ist zu pessimistisch. Das Modell prognostiziert den ganzen Tag Zirren, was wohl der Grund dafür ist. PS: Gestern war der Temp eher schlechter, an der mittleren Jurakette konnte aber recht gut geflogen werden. L'isothermie est cependant chauffée à blanc par le fort réchauffement (matin 8°, 16h 24°). Thermiques top 14h 2000-2100 16h 2400-2600 Selon les prévisions, les thermiques sont moins bons à la premiere chaîne du Jura qu'à l'arrière. Meteoparapente est trop pessimiste. Le modèle prévoit des cirrus toute la journée, ce qui en est probablement la raison. PS : Hier, le temp était plus mauvais, mais il était possible de voler assez bien au niveau de la chaîne centrale du Jura.
