Am Samstag hatten wir nochmals ein XC Ligafliegen im Wallis. Bereits am Freitag beim Briefing viel uns auf, dass es im Rohnetal deutlichen Ostwind hat. Doch bei prognostiziert Null hPa Südüberdruck kann doch das kein Föhn sein?
Na ja, die Staumauer im Süden sprach deutliche Bände am Samstag. Sebastian Benz ist beim studieren der Temps aufgefallen, dass im Süden kältere Luft liegt, es also (leider) seichten Föhn hat. Trotzdem ging es am Anfang richtig gut und bis Zum Grimsel (oder darüber hinaus) war es gut zum Fliegen. Spätestens ab dem Mittag nahm der Südwind/Föhn dann aber zu und das Fliegen wurde definitiv anspruchsvoller. Die Thermik war ausgesprochen stark und vom Wind zerrissen. Das bekamen alle zu spüren, die tief flogen. Über 2500 oder 3000m war es erstaunlich ruhig und hoch zu fliegen war dann auch die Taktik jener Piloten, die weit flogen. Irgendwann war es dann aber wohl allen zu bockig und die meisten von uns sind freiwillig und vorzeitig landen gegangen.
Einmal mehr ein spannender Tag, insbesondere was das Wetter anbelangt.

On Saturday we had another XC league flying in Valais. Already on Friday at the briefing we noticed that there was a clear east wind in the Rohne valley. But with a forecast of zero hPa south overpressure, this can't be a foehn?
Well, the dam in the south spoke volumes on Saturday. Sebastian Benz noticed while studying the temps that there is colder air in the south, so there is (unfortunately) shallow foehn. Nevertheless, it went really well at the beginning and up to Grimsel (or beyond) it was good to fly. But at the latest from noon on the south wind/foehn increased and the flying definitely became more challenging. The thermals were very strong and torn by the wind. This was felt by all who flew low. Above 2500 or 3000m it was surprisingly calm and flying high was then also the tactic of those pilots who flew far. At some point, however, it was probably too stubborn for all of us and most of us voluntarily and prematurely landed.
Once again an exciting day, especially concerning the weather.
