Endlich ist es wieder soweit – der XC League Weltrekordversuch steht an. Während wir in anderen Jahren jeweils im Oktober nach Brasilien gegangen sind, geht es dieses Mal in die USA, besser gesagt nach Texas. Hier wurde der aktuelle Weltrekord von etwas über 600km geflogen, auch zahlreiche frühere Weltrekorde wurden in dieser Region aufgestellt. Einer der Gründe, wieso es hier im Sommer so weit fliegt, ist die Dry Line:
Eine Dry Line ist eine Linie quer über einen Kontinent, die feuchte und trockene Luft voneinander trennt. Die feuchte Luft vom Golf von Mexiko trifft dabei auf die trockene Luft aus den Wüstenstaaten im Südwesten. Die Dry Line tritt nicht jeden Tag auf und sie ändert oft ihre Position. Wenn sie aber ausgeprägt ist, kann man ihr entlang ausgesprochen gut fliegen. Möglicherweise weil es mitten im Sommer ist, oder weil es doch sehr abenteuerlich ist; auf jeden Fall haben sich nur wenige Piloten für den Weltrekordversuch angemeldet (was sehr zu bedauern ist). Zudem musste der XC Ligachef feststellen, dass nach einem Iran-Besuch das ESTA-Formular nicht ausreicht und der Antrag für ein Touristen-VISA für die USA drei Monate dauert. Wie dem auch sei, leider sind dieses Jahr nur Rico Chandra und Sebastian Benz für die Schweiz auf Weltrekordjagd. Das machen sie aber nicht alleine, sondern haben sich mit Rafael Saladini und Timo Leonetti zu einem äusserst schlagkräftigen Team zusammengesetzt. In den nächsten zwei Wochen werden sie versuchen, im südlichen Texas so weit als möglich zu fliegen. Hier werden sie kurze Tagesberichte schrieben (eventuell macht das auch der XC Ligachef – da er ja jetzt viel Zeit hat).

Finally, the time has come again - the XC League world record attempt is coming up. While in other years we went to Brazil in October, this time we are going to the USA, or rather to Texas. This is where the current world record of just over 600km was flown, and numerous previous world records were also set in this region. One of the reasons why it flies so far here in summer is the Dry Line:
A Dry Line is a line across a continent that separates moist and dry air. The moist air from the Gulf of Mexico meets the dry air from the desert states in the Southwest. The Dry Line does not occur every day and it often changes position. But when it is pronounced, you can fly along it exceptionally well. Maybe because it is the middle of summer, or maybe because it is very adventurous; in any case, only a few pilots signed up for the world record attempt (which is very regrettable). In addition, the XC League chief had to realize that after a visit to Iran, the ESTA form is not sufficient and the application for a tourist VISA for the USA takes three months. Be that as it may, unfortunately only Rico Chandra and Sebastian Benz are chasing world records for Switzerland this year. However, they are not doing it alone, but have joined forces with Rafael Saladini and Timo Leonetti to form an extremely powerful team. In the next two weeks they will try to fly as far as possible in southern Texas. Here they will write short daily reports (maybe the XC league boss will do that as well - since he has a lot of time now).
