Verbier: Short but difficult task, Fabrice wins!

Martin Scheel, 15. August 2024
It has been a very complex weather and wind situation. We had these concerns before the task: "Maybe it's too stable, maybe too turbulent, maybe too simple... " Well, it was stable, especially at an altitude of around 1700/1800 metres, with cirrus clouds and then the feared shadows from Congestus on the main Alpine ridge. And so the field of participants was divided into ‘those at the top’ and ‘those at the bottom’, so to speak. Those who didn't get up right away at the start had a very difficult time. Many struggled at the lower level and didn't get above the mentioned 1700 metres... (50% of the participants). Above it went with usable thermals up to 3350, and there was not a very strong southerly wind. 15 pilots reached the goal, note the three women in 12-14th place :-) The ranking: 1 ThiébaudFabrice M SUI NiviukIcepeak X-One 01:27:02 444.5 2 DescombesHenri M SUI OzoneZeno2 01:27:43 438.5 3 CoxSteve M SUI OzoneEnzo3 ChilloutParagliding 01:30:17 436.6 4 MeloHippolyte M FRA OzoneEnzo3 Friends&parents,XC Tracer 15:32:11 435.4 5 DandeuDario M ESP NiviukIcepeak X-One 01:32:12 433.0 6 Breitinger Dominik M SUI GinBoomerang 12 GINGliders, zorro.ch 01:32:26 432.9 7 DarrozeTilo M FRA OzoneZeno2 Racer1927|Cébé|BW 01:32:46 432.5 8 KusterMaxime M FRA GinBoomerang 12 CREG_EquipedeLigue Grand-Est 01:32:38 431.4 9 FuchsJoel M SUI OzoneEnzo3 RemaxZermatt,BlueTomato 01:31:51 430.2 10 BollingerTim M SUI GinBoomerang 12 zorro.chGingliders 01:32:58 430.0 11 BritschgiBruno M SUI AdvanceIota DLS 01:38:46 412.2 12 Pfrunder Manuela F SUI OzonePhoton 01:41:04 410.5 13 VinuesaEva F ESP OzoneZeno 01:39:27 407.9 14 ChivetMathilde F FRA OzoneZeno2 AirDesign-CNF-SyrideRuedel'Air-Flyeo-Club 01:40:19 407.4 15 KordiReza M SUI OzoneEnzo3 01:45:29 403.2 In the competition Overall after 3 task are 2 French Juniors ahead! 1 Montuori François M FRA Ozone Enzo 3 Haglofs / Thermic 1589.9 2 Melo Hippolyte M FRA Ozone Enzo 3 Friends & parents, XC Tracer 1580.0 3 Kägi Jérôme M SUI Ozone Enzo 3 JAKWEB / zipp.chat / La Vida es Dura 1579.2 4 Morgenthaler Stephan M SUI Ozone Enzo 3 Nilmo.ch 1560.8 5 Cox Steve M SUI Ozone Enzo 3 Chillout Paragliding 1538.3

Verbier: Info and Meteo Thursday: Update

Martin Scheel, 15. August 2024
Program 10:30 Briefing at the lunch room La Ruinettes (get your tracker before you enter the lunch room) METEO Heute liegt die Schweiz in einer schwachen südlichen bis südwestlichen Höhenströmung. In den südwestlichen Landesteilen beeinflusst ein sich zum Mittelmeer abspaltendes Höhentief das Wetter: Die Luft ist labiler und die Gewitterneigung erhöht. (MétéoSuisse) There is a slight northerly overpressure on the ground (2hp), but a slight southerly overpressure at altitude (the Alps), which leads to southerly winds near the Alpine ridge and south wind above 2000 m. Pressure: Approx. 1018 A slightly less unstable layer up to 1000 m will hardly slow down the development of thermals in our area, but probably high clouds slow it down. We can expect the development of moderate thermals from midday, later 1-3/8 with base at 3300, above high relief 3800 and higher. From mid-afternoon, spreading Cu with shadows possibly followed by rain showers in the vicinity (our flight area should remain dry til late afternoon). Thermal quality: Unfortunately, there is a bit of warm air advection, which worsens the thermals. If additionally high clouds are shading a litte bit, it could be, that the flight is slow. Normal valley winds 1500 m 5-10 N 2000 m Verbier 5-10 S, in the Wallis-valleys from north, 5-10 kmh 2500 m Verbier 10-15 kmh S, towards higher relief 20-25 kmh 3000 m Verbier 20 kmh S, towards higher relief 30 kmh, further east less 3500 m Verbier 25 kmh S, towards higher relief 35 kmh, further east less 4000 m 30-40 kmh S The wind-direction turns from NW/W on the ground over north at about 1500m, to northeast at 2000m, to east, southeast to south at 2500m. The hight of this change of wind direction varies depending on the location. Summary: Up to 2000 m we'll have a northerly breeze, above that we'll have southerly winds, the higher the stronger, too strong in the Valais valleys. In addition, we'll probably see even bigger cu forming in the afternoon, but I'm expecting rather no showers. We'll have to rely heavily on the locals for the task setting.
