Geplant war ein Wettkampftag in Grindelwald mit Prognosen, die ab etwa 11:00 bis ca. 15:00 Uhr Sonne und gute Bedingungen versprachen. Als wir jedoch von Interlaken Ost nach Grindelwald und weiter mit der Gondel auf den First fuhren, zeigte sich ein ganz anderes Bild: keine Sonne, stattdessen begann es kurz darauf sogar zu schneien. Trotz dieser Bedingungen wurde ein Task über 52 km mit Ziel in Interlaken gesetzt. Das Briefing fand um 11:30 Uhr statt, das Startfenster wurde um 12:00 Uhr geöffnet und der Airstart um 12:45 Uhr. Beim Öffnen des Startfensters schneite es noch leicht – von Sonne keine Spur. Die ersten Pilotinnen und Piloten starteten entsprechend zögerlich. Doch dank eines ausgezeichneten Gradienten entwickelte sich überraschend zuverlässige Thermik. Viele sprachen später von “Magic Air”: Trotz Schneefall ging es teilweise bis auf 2900 m, zwischendurch mit stärkerem Schneefall, dann wieder leichtem Aufhellen – aber immer mit Steigen. Am Ende flogen 18 Piloten bis nach Interlaken, davon erreichten 16 das Goal. Ein Task unter Bedingungen, die man so selten erlebt – fast schon unglaubwürdig. Ich danke allen Pilotinnen und Piloten für das Vertrauen und freue mich auf das nächste Mal. Future Team – starke Leistung Besonders bemerkenswert ist die Rangliste des Future Teams (Nachwuchsförderung der Swiss League): In der Overall-Wertung gehen 8 der ersten 11 Plätze auf ihr Konto – rund die Hälfte davon sogar mit C-Schirmen. Herzliche Gratulation! *** English *** The plan was a competition day in Grindelwald, with forecasts indicating sunny conditions and good flying weather from around 11:00 to 15:00. However, as we travelled from Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald and then up to First by gondola, the reality looked very different: no sunshine at all – and about 30 minutes later it even started snowing. Despite these conditions, a 52 km task with goal in Interlaken was set. The briefing took place at 11:30, launch opened at 12:00, and air start was at 12:45. When the launch window opened, it was still lightly snowing and there was no sign of the sun. Pilots started hesitantly. But thanks to a very good gradient, thermals turned out to be surprisingly reliable. Many pilots later described it as “magic air”: Despite ongoing snowfall, climbs reached up to 2900 m, sometimes with heavier snow, sometimes brief bright moments – but always lift. In the end, 18 pilots made it to Interlaken, with 16 reaching goal. A task under conditions that are rarely seen – almost unbelievable. I would like to thank all pilots for their trust and look forward to the next event. Future Team – outstanding performance A remarkable highlight is the result of the Future Team (Swiss League junior program): In the overall ranking, 8 of the top 11 positions were taken by them – about half of them flying C gliders. Samstag – Grindelwald Für den Samstag planen wir aktuell einen Wettkampftag in Grindelwald. Die Prognosen zeigen am Vormittag und über die Mittagszeit gute Chancen auf sonnige Abschnitte mit nutzbarer Thermik. Im Tagesverlauf ist jedoch mit zunehmender Quellbewölkung und möglichen Schauern zu rechnen. Ein Task erscheint grundsätzlich möglich, wobei das nutzbare Zeitfenster voraussichtlich begrenzt sein wird. Sonntag – offen Für den Sonntag ist die Entwicklung weiterhin unsicher. Mit südöstlichen Höhenwinden gelangt meist trockene Luft zu uns. Bis Freitag stabile und sonnige Bedingungen. Für das Wochenende zeichnet sich jedoch eine unsichere Entwicklung mit zunehmender Bewölkung und möglichem Schauereinfluss ab, insbesondere in den Bergen. Samstag Wahrscheinlich wechselnd bewölkt und nur teilweise sonnig. Im Tagesverlauf sind gebietsweise Schauer möglich, besonders am Nachmittag und in den Bergen. Schneefallgrenze um etwa 1100–1200 m. Temperaturen um 11–14 °C im Flachland, dazu schwache bis mässige Bise. Die Thermik dürfte bei Auflockerungen phasenweise möglich sein, insgesamt aber unzuverlässig und durch Abschattung gestört, mit eher moderater Basis. Sonntag Unsichere Entwicklung. Wahrscheinlich zunächst eher bewölkt mit möglichen Restschauern, im Tagesverlauf Übergang zu teilweise sonnigen Bedingungen. Temperaturen um 10–13 °C, weiterhin schwache bis mässige Bise. Thermik grundsätzlich möglich, jedoch stark abhängig von der Bewölkungsentwicklung. Insgesamt leicht besseres Potenzial als am Samstag, bleibt aber unsicher. Aktuelle Tendenz Die Situation ist stark modellabhängig. Aktuell scheint es wahrscheinlich, dass wenn überhaupt nur ein Tag für einen Task in Frage kommt, eher der Sonntag. Nach heutigem Stand könnte der Samstag im Wallis lokal funktionieren, während der Sonntag dort wieder eingeschränkt sein könnte. A key factor is the development of upper-level lows on both Saturday and Sunday, which may lead to significantly different forecast scenarios depending on their exact track. This makes planning currently quite challenging. General Situation Switzerland is located on the southern edge of a strong high-pressure system over Northern and Eastern Europe, resulting in a bise flow. With southeasterly winds aloft, mostly dry air is being advected into the region. Stable and sunny conditions are expected until Friday. For the weekend, however, a more uncertain development is expected, with increasing cloud cover and a potential for showers, especially in the mountains. Saturday Likely partly cloudy with variable cloud cover and only limited sunshine. Showers are possible during the day, especially in the afternoon and in the mountains. Snow line around 1100–1200 m. Temperatures around 11–14 °C in the lowlands, with a weak to moderate bise. Thermal activity may be possible during sunny periods, but overall conditions are expected to be inconsistent and affected by cloud shading, with a rather moderate cloud base. Sunday Uncertain development. Likely rather cloudy at first with possible residual showers, followed by partial clearing during the day. Temperatures around 10–13 °C, with continued weak to moderate bise. Thermal development is generally possible but highly dependent on cloud cover. Overall slightly better potential than Saturday, but still uncertain. Current Trend The situation remains highly model-dependent. At the moment, it appears that if any task is possible, it would more likely be on Sunday. Based on current data, Saturday could locally work in the Valais, while Sunday there may again become more restricted. We will provide another update tomorrow, hopefully with more precise information.

Swiss Cup Flex – Event Absage (15.–16. März 2026) Nach Analyse der aktuellen Wetterprognosen und dem Meteo-Briefing mit MeteoSchweiz muss der Swiss Cup Flex vom 15.–16. März 2026 leider abgesagt werden. Eine aktive Westlage bringt am Samstag eine Störung über die Schweiz mit verbreitet dichter Bewölkung und teils anhaltenden Niederschlägen entlang der Alpen. Die Schneefallgrenze sinkt im Tagesverlauf von etwa 1000–1400 m auf rund 600–800 m, wodurch in vielen Bergregionen mit Neuschnee zu rechnen ist. Zusätzlich wird in den Bergen mässiger bis starker Wind erwartet, während die Temperaturen auf 2000 m von etwa −1 °C auf rund −7 °C sinken. Unter diesen Bedingungen ist am Samstag keine nutzbare Thermik zu erwarten. Am Sonntag bleibt das Wetter weiterhin wechselhaft mit vielen Wolken und einzelnen Schauern. Zwar sind besonders in den Alpen zeitweise auch sonnige Abschnitte möglich, doch der verbreitete Neuschnee wird die Bodenheizung deutlich reduzieren, wodurch auch am Sonntag kaum mit brauchbarer Thermik zu rechnen ist. Zudem würde der Neuschnee den Start von rund 100 Pilotinnen und Piloten in vielen Gebieten erheblich erschweren oder verunmöglichen. Eine mögliche Ausnahme könnte der Waadtländer Jura darstellen, wo weniger Niederschlag erwartet wird und am Sonntag relativ früh wieder sonnige Abschnitte möglich sind. Allerdings dürften dort eine tiefe Basis sowie eine wahrscheinlich starke Bise von etwa 15–30 kt ebenfalls keinen fairen und sicheren Task ermöglichen. Zudem ist die Anreise für einen möglichen einzelnen Wettkampftag zu weit. Nach Abwägung aller Optionen sehen wir für Samstag und Sonntag kein Gebiet in der Schweiz, das einen sicheren und fairen Task erlauben würde. Aus diesen Gründen hat sich die Organisation entschieden, den Swiss Cup Flex für dieses Wochenende abzusagen. *** English *** After reviewing the latest weather forecasts and discussing the situation with MeteoSwiss, the Swiss Cup Flex scheduled for 15–16 March 2026 has been cancelled. A strong westerly weather pattern will bring a disturbance across Switzerland on Saturday with widespread cloud cover and significant precipitation along the Alps. The snow line is expected to drop during the day from around 1000–1400 m to approximately 600–800 m, bringing fresh snow to many mountain regions. In addition, moderate to strong winds are expected in the mountains, while temperatures at 2000 m will drop from around −1 °C to about −7 °C during the day. Under these conditions, no usable thermals are expected on Saturday. On Sunday the weather will remain unstable with variable cloud cover and possible showers. Although occasional sunny periods may occur, the large amounts of fresh snow in the Alps will significantly reduce ground heating, making meaningful thermal development unlikely. The fresh snow would also make the launch of around 100 pilots very difficult or impossible in many areas. One possible exception could be the Jura in the Canton of Vaud, where precipitation is expected to be lower and sunshine may return earlier on Sunday. However, the forecast low cloud base and a likely strong Bise of around 15–30 kt would still make a fair and safe task very unlikely. Additionally, the long travel distance for a potential single competition day makes this option impractical. After evaluating all available options, we do not see any region in Switzerland that would allow a safe and fair task on either Saturday or Sunday. For these reasons, the organisation has decided to cancel the Swiss Cup Flex weekend.

Eine westliche bis südwestliche Strömung bestimmt das Wetter über den Alpen und führt feuchte Luftmassen sowie mehrere schwache Störungen in die Schweiz. Dadurch ist am Wochenende verbreitet mit dichter Bewölkung und zeitweise Niederschlägen zu rechnen. Samstag Am Samstag ist es voraussichtlich meist stark bewölkt mit zeitweisen Regenfällen oder Schauern. Die Sonneneinstrahlung dürfte deutlich eingeschränkt sein, wodurch sich kaum nutzbare Thermik entwickeln kann. Selbst bei kurzen Auflockerungen wäre die Thermik voraussichtlich sehr schwach und die Basis entsprechend tief. Sonntag Auch am Sonntag bleibt das Wetter voraussichtlich wechselhaft mit vielen Wolken und möglichen Schauern. Aufgrund der weiterhin eingeschränkten Sonneneinstrahlung ist auch an diesem Tag kaum mit nutzbarer Thermik zu rechnen. Aktuelle Einschätzung Aufgrund der aktuellen Prognosen erscheinen die Chancen für fliegbare Taskbedingungen am Wochenende derzeit sehr gering. Die Prognosen haben sich in den letzten Modellläufen zudem eher verschlechtert. Wir werden die Wettersituation morgen (Donnerstag) nach unserem Meteo-Briefing mit MeteoSchweiz nochmals beurteilen und anschliessend ein Update veröffentlichen. Aktuell bleiben die Chancen für einen vollwertigen Task jedoch sehr gering. *** English *** The current weather outlook for the upcoming Swiss Cup Flex weekend indicates rather unstable conditions across Switzerland. As a result, widespread cloud cover and periods of precipitation are expected during the weekend. Saturday Saturday is expected to be mostly overcast with occasional rain or showers. Sunshine will likely be very limited, which significantly reduces the potential for thermal development. Even if short clear periods occur locally, thermals would likely remain weak with a relatively low cloud base. Sunday Conditions on Sunday appear similar, with continued unsettled weather. Persistent cloud cover and possible showers are expected throughout the day. With limited solar heating, the development of usable thermals currently looks unlikely. Current Assessment Based on the current forecasts, the chances for flyable task conditions during the weekend appear very low. Forecast trends in recent model runs have also been slightly deteriorating. We will review the weather situation again tomorrow (Thursday) after our briefing call with MeteoSwiss and provide an updated outlook. At the moment, however, the chances for a flyable task remain very low.

The annual CIVL Plenary has come to an end. The agenda included many discussions and amendments to the motions during the meetings. Four of the six Swiss motions were approved. The reduction in the number of participants in Cat 1 events was not accepted. The motion to switch from GPS altitude to QNH for evaluation was rejected. The reason for this is likely to be the complexity of the issue. A big thank you goes to Jörg Ewald, who drafted the Swiss motions and was praised by the CIVL for his professionalism. The most important changes: - GS ballast, as in 2018, maximum 33 kg. - GS weight class up to 95 kg is introduced. - Definition of sports class wings. - Scoring at H&F events is defined. - Protectors for paraglider harnesses with new G values. - Elevated Goal is introduced as an option. Michael Sigel hat beim Paragliding World Cup im indischen Panchgani den Gesamtsieg über 7 Tasks geholt. Für den 38-Jährigen war es ein Wettkampf ohne grosse Erwartungen und wurde genau deshalb zu einem der stärksten Auftritte seiner Karriere. Gratulation!! ***** Michael Sigel a remporté la victoire finale lors de la Coupe du monde de parapente à Panchgani, en Inde, après 7 épreuves. Pour ce pilote de 38 ans, il s'agissait d'une compétition sans grandes attentes, qui s'est précisément transformée en l'une des plus belles performances de sa carrière. Félicitations!

Unfortunately, we have to cancel the Swiss Cup Flex 1 due to the weather forecast. There is a slight chance for local flying (BEO, easter Switzerland on Saturday, Jura on Sunday), Any ad-hoc Regio events will be announced on their respective channels. In detail: Saturday: A dispersing cold front slowly moves over Switzerland and brings a lot of cloud cover and humidity. The extent of that cloud cover varies from model run to model run, therefore there is a chance for a sunny window with weak to very moderate thermals, especially in BEO, Wallis, and Surselva. But cloud base will be low (2200-2500 in BEO). There will be more sun towards the east, but there the south-west is considerable, approaching Föhn. Sunday: The front moves away very slowly, leaving a lot of humidity behind that will turn into considerable clouds, clearing up from the west. Again, there is a chance for sunny spots locally, but overall thermals are expected to be weak, if at all. Given that we do not see a chance for two tasks anywhere, and even for Saturday, chances for a race are low according to the current forecasts, we cancel the event. The current high-pressure situation will end this weekend with a disturbance approaching from the west. The exact path of that disturbance, its arrival time and its magnitude by the time it arrives are highly uncertain. This has the effect that the prognosis varies strongly between the different forecast models, and also within a model from calculation run to calculation run. At this time, everything is still possible: 2 flying days, only fly Saturday, or only Sunday, or nothing at all. We will aim for another quick update around noon tomorrow Thursday and then make the call tomorrow evening.

Today was Task 6, a 77 km race with a strong southerly wind around 25 km/h. The take-off was quite sketchy with the wind strength, making the launch phase a bit tense. The start was set at 14:00, which turned out to be perfect timing — we were already well positioned about 8 minutes before the start opened. The task was designed as a square. The first leg to the north was relatively straightforward, followed by a leg to the east with plenty of cumulus clouds and some very nice lines, allowing good progress. The southern section was much more technical, with strong headwind and higher terrain to cross. Fortunately, we had enough altitude to manage it. At the last turnpoint before ESS we were still around 40 pilots together, so the race was wide open. The final section towards the south was quite decisive, with a 17 km glide into goal. Thermals were weak, giving an average glide ratio of around 7, which made efficiency and decisions even more important. A few pilots from the leading group landed before ESS, which reshuffled the results again. Today we used the main take-off again, the same as in the previous tasks, with a relatively strong southerly wind around 20 km/h. The launch conditions were quite manageable despite the wind strength, and the start phase went relatively smoothly. Task 5 was a 77 km race with a maximum cloud base around 2,900 m. The second leg towards the south was quite long, with low speeds in transition due to rather weak thermals. This allowed a large part of the gaggle to regroup around Panchgani, which reset the race dynamics a bit. After that, several gaggles split depending on the chosen lines and who managed to connect the better climbs. In the end, it really came down to timing — whoever found the strongest thermal and left first had the advantage. The last 5 km were flown at full speed, pushing hard on bar all the way to goal. Today more south wind was predicted and we went to another takeoff which was better suited for the southerly winds. Unfortunately the burned down the whole hill and everything was covered with ashes. The organization did everything they could to get the takeoff as clean as possible and sent a few helpers a day before in order to get the takeoff ready for us. We arrived to a properly cleaned starting area where they have also tried to cover as much of the area as possible with plastic covers. The wind was strong and the takeoff itself relatively small (only two gliders at the time were able to prepare for taking off). Therefore the starting procedure took quite some time and also because there were many aborted starts. Once in the air, the lifts were much weaker then the days before, and we had to take 3m/s thermals to go up to cloud base. We have never had really nice clouds the days before, but today they were forming quite nicely on the task line. As it is very dusty in the air, it sometimes was hard to tell if you are flying in the dust or already in the clouds. The first TP was set around 10km to the southeast, before turning back, flying over Panchgani and crossing the lake to the north in order to reach TP2. After that, a 40km leg to the south was set, before landing in goal. During the start, there were two groups. Unfortunately almost all the swiss guys, were in the left group, which was the worse decision. Benjamin was on the right side as well together with me. We had a quite good line going in to the south and back direction Panchgani. After tacking the second turnpoint in the Nortch, Michael Sigel, who started on the left side, slowly managed to catch up and eventually made it back in to the leading group together with me, just in time to cross the flats. It was a long glide, where we did not cross one thermal. Fortunately we arrived with a good amount of altitude on the other side and managed to catch a good lift which got us high enough to start the 15km final glide. We were pushing full bar throughout the whole 15km and arrived 20 seconds behind the first pilot (which unfortunately has a slightly faster glider). Benjamin arrived only 1:45 minutes later with a very good result as well. The other swisspilots unfortunately were not able to catch up and started struggeling with weaker climbs behind us and lost a bit of time to the leaders. In the overall ranking it is now very tight with the top three only separated by 5 points. It looks like we are able to fly 7/7 tasks, so there are still 3 tasks to go. Michael Sigel is looking really strong with scoring over 980pts in every task so far and is the only one in the top 3 with no discard. Positions overall after 4 tasks: 1. Dominik Breitinger 2. British Winter Open Roldanillo 2026 - Task 5: Versöhnlicher Abschluss eines Marathons Zum finalen Lauf kündigte sich Regen an, was zu einem kurzen 63-km-Sprint führte. Nach einem mühsamen Start kämpfte ich mich zurück und beende die intensive Kolumbien-Saison mit einem zufriedenen Lächeln – nur 35 Sekunden hinter dem Sieger. Der letzte Tag des British Winter Open stand im Zeichen der Wetterprognose: Da für den späteren Nachmittag Regen angekündigt war, setzte das Task-Committee eine vergleichsweise kurze Aufgabe von 63 km an. Um den Piloten die Möglichkeit zu geben, potenziellen Regenzellen grossräumig auszuweichen, wurde ein riesiger Startzylinder bis hinaus nach Zarzal gewählt. Die Bedingungen zu Beginn waren zäh. Die Thermik war verblasen und zerrissen, es dauerte lange, bis man sich wirklich in der Höhe positionieren konnte. Mein Start verlief dementsprechend nicht optimal; ich überquerte die Linie etwa 150 Meter unter der Basis und damit deutlich tiefer als die Spitzengruppe. Es folgte ein dreifaches Zickzack durch das Tal Richtung Norden. In der ersten Phase fand ich einfach keinen guten Rhythmus. Oft musste ich tief weitergleiten, und der erhoffte, richtig starke Schlauch liess auf sich warten. Doch Geduld zahlt sich aus: Am letzten Wendepunkt im Osten erwischte ich endlich die ersehnte starke Thermik und konnte bis auf 2200 Meter aufdrehen. Mit dieser komfortablen Höhe konnte ich wieder zur Spitze aufschliessen. Taktisch lief es nun perfekt: Während die beiden Führungsgruppen links und rechts von der Ideallinie abwichen, konnte ich die optimierte Route fliegen und meinen Rückstand wieder gutmachen. Die letzten Kilometer waren dank der Gruppe relativ entspannt, da genügend Piloten unter uns die Luftmassen markierten. Im "End of Speed" (ESS) drehte ich noch ein, zwei Sicherheitskreise und flog zufrieden ins Goal. Wie unglaublich eng das Niveau hier ist, zeigte der Blick auf die Uhr: 43 Piloten donnerten innerhalb von nur zwei Minuten über die Linie. Ich selbst kam gerade mal 35 Sekunden hinter dem Sieger an. Im Livetracking fehlten zunächst noch die Lead-out-Punkte, weshalb mich die finale Rangliste vom 13. Rang noch auf den 32. Rang nach hinten spülte – der mühsame Start hatte mich wertvolle Führungspunkte gekostet. Dennoch bin ich mega happy mit dem heutigen Lauf, denn mit nur 22 Punkten Rückstand auf den Tagessieger war das eine Top-Leistung. Fazit der Saison Es war ein versöhnlicher Abschluss hier in Kolumbien. Mit 30 Flugtagen in 40 Tagen blieb die Ausbeute wettertechnisch zwar etwas unter den hohen Erwartungen an Roldanillo, aber es waren dennoch einige absolute Top-Tage dabei. Die etwas ruhigeren Wetterphasen hatten zudem ihr Gutes: Sie ermöglichten es mir, fünf Wettbewerbe in Folge zu fliegen, ohne am Ende völlig erschöpft zu sein. ----- Français -----
British Winter Open Roldanillo 2026 – Manche 5 : Une fin de marathon réconciliatrice La pluie s'annonçant pour la finale, nous avons eu droit à un sprint court de 63 km. Après un départ laborieux, je me suis battu pour revenir et je termine cette saison intense en Colombie avec un sourire satisfait – à seulement 35 secondes du vainqueur. La dernière journée du British Winter Open a été dictée par les prévisions météorologiques : de la pluie étant annoncée pour la fin d'après-midi, le comité de course a fixé une manche relativement courte de 63 km. Pour permettre aux pilotes d'éviter largement les éventuelles cellules de pluie, un immense cylindre de départ a été choisi, s'étendant jusqu'à Zarzal. Les conditions de départ étaient difficiles. Les thermiques étaient soufflés et hachés, et il a fallu beaucoup de temps pour vraiment se placer en altitude. Mon départ n'a donc pas été optimal ; j'ai franchi la ligne environ 150 mètres sous le plafond, soit nettement plus bas que le groupe de tête. S'en est suivi un triple zigzag à travers la vallée en direction du nord. Dans la première phase, je n'arrivais pas à trouver le bon rythme. Je devais souvent transiter bas, et le thermique puissant tant espéré se faisait attendre. Mais la patience paie : au dernier point de virage à l'est, j'ai enfin accroché l'ascendance forte que j'attendais et j'ai pu monter jusqu'à 2200 mètres. Avec cette altitude confortable, j'ai pu recoller à la tête de course. Tactiquement, tout s'est alors déroulé parfaitement : alors que les deux groupes de tête s'écartaient à gauche et à droite de la ligne idéale, j'ai pu voler sur la route optimisée et combler mon retard. Les derniers kilomètres ont été relativement détendus grâce au groupe, car suffisamment de pilotes marquaient la masse d'air en dessous de nous. Dans le "End of Speed" (ESS), j'ai fait un ou deux cercles de sécurité et j'ai volé vers le Goal, satisfait. Le niveau est incroyablement serré ici, comme le montre le chronomètre : 43 pilotes ont franchi la ligne en l'espace de deux minutes seulement. Je suis moi-même arrivé à peine 35 secondes après le vainqueur. Sur le livetracking, les points de lead-out manquaient initialement, c'est pourquoi le classement final m'a fait reculer de la 13ème à la 32ème place – mon départ laborieux m'a coûté de précieux points de leadership. Néanmoins, je suis super content de la manche d'aujourd'hui, car avec seulement 22 points de retard sur le vainqueur, c'est une top performance. Bilan de la saison C'est une fin réconciliatrice ici en Colombie. Avec 30 jours de vol en 40 jours, le bilan météorologique est certes resté un peu en deçà des attentes élevées pour Roldanillo, mais il y a tout de même eu quelques journées absolument exceptionnelles. Les phases météo un peu plus calmes ont aussi eu du bon : elles m'ont permis d'enchaîner cinq compétitions sans être totalement épuisé à la fin. ----- English -----
British Winter Open Roldanillo 2026 – Task 5: A Conciliatory End to a Marathon With rain forecast for the finale, we flew a short 63km sprint. After a laborious start, I fought my way back and finished the intense Colombian season with a satisfied smile – just 35 seconds behind the winner. The final day of the British Winter Open was dominated by the weather forecast. With rain predicted for the late afternoon, the task committee set a comparatively short task of 63 km. To give the pilots the opportunity to give a wide berth to potential rain cells, a huge start cylinder extending out to Zarzal was chosen. Conditions at the beginning were tough. The thermals were wind-blown and broken, and it took a long time to really get positioned high. Accordingly, my start was not optimal; I crossed the line about 150 meters below cloud base, significantly lower than the lead gaggle. A triple zigzag through the valley towards the north followed. In the first phase, I just couldn't find a good rhythm. I often had to glide on low, and the hoped-for strong climb kept me waiting. But patience pays off: at the last turnpoint in the east, I finally caught the strong thermal I had been waiting for and was able to climb up to 2200 meters. With this comfortable altitude, I was able to catch up with the leaders again. Tactically, things went perfectly from there: while the two lead groups deviated left and right from the ideal line, I was able to fly the optimized route and make up my deficit. The last few kilometers were relatively relaxed thanks to the group, as there were enough pilots below us marking the airmass. Into "End of Speed" (ESS), I took one or two safety turns and flew into Goal, satisfied. Just how incredibly tight the level is here was shown by the clock: 43 pilots thundered across the line within just two minutes. I myself arrived just 35 seconds behind the winner. The livetracking initially lacked the lead-out points, which is why the final ranking washed me back from 13th to 32nd place – the laborious start had cost me valuable leading points. Nevertheless, I am super happy with today's run, because finishing only 22 points behind the day's winner was a top performance. Season Conclusion It was a conciliatory end here in Colombia. With 30 flying days in 40 days, the weather yield remained slightly below the high expectations for Roldanillo, but there were still some absolutely top days. The somewhat quieter weather phases also had their upside: they enabled me to fly five competitions in a row without being completely exhausted at the end. Task 5 Results – Swiss Team 8. The start was good, and I immediately felt comfortable in the air. The first climbs were decent, and I managed to position myself well from the beginning. After the first turnpoint, however, the day became tricky. The middle section was extremely demanding, with lots of shade and weak, broken thermals. Many pilots struggled there, and bomb-outs accumulated quickly along the course. I decided to push through that section and ended up leading the whole race. It felt like I really understood the air today, choosing the right lines, committing to small climbs and keeping the rhythm even when it was low and technical. Most of the time we were flying at no more than 1600 m, constantly working marginal lift and trying to stay efficient without overcommitting. It was not a fast racing day. It was about patience, reading subtle triggers and trusting your decisions. Toward the end of the course, the conditions became a bit more organized again, and the final glide was more straightforward compared to the brutal middle part. In the end, only 15 pilots made goal, which shows how selective the task was.
